PMDC Passing Marks for MBBS

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) regulates the standards for medical education in Pakistan, including passing criteria for the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree. Based on the latest official notification, the passing marks for MBBS examinations have been restored to 50% for the 2024–2025 academic session. This applies to both theory and practical components unless specified otherwise by the university curriculum.

Key Details:

  • Current Passing Threshold: 50% aggregate in each subject/examination.
  • Attendance Requirement: Minimum 75% attendance is mandatory for eligibility to appear in exams.
  • Applicability: This reversion applies to students enrolled up to and including the 2024–2025 session. Earlier in 2025, PMDC had attempted to raise it to 65% (and initially proposed 70%), but due to feedback from students, universities, and stakeholders, it was rolled back to the previous standard.

Recent Changes Timeline:

Date/Event Change Reason/Impact
Pre-2025 (Historical) 50% passing marks Standard for prior sessions.
February 2025 Proposed increase to 70% passing marks + 90% attendance Aimed at raising standards; faced backlash.
Mid-2025 Adjusted to 65% passing marks + 85% attendance Partial rollback after consultations.
November 3–4, 2025 Restored to 50% passing marks + 75% attendance Official notification for 2024–25 session; eases burden on current students.

Additional Notes:

  • Admission Eligibility: For entry into MBBS programs (separate from exam passing marks), candidates need at least 70% aggregate in HSSC/FSc (Pre-Medical) or equivalent, plus qualifying the PMDC admission test/MD CAT with minimum 60% marks.
  • Future Proposals: PMDC is considering gradual increases (e.g., 5% increments) for sessions after 2024–25, but nothing is finalized yet.
  • For the most up-to-date official guidelines, refer to the PMDC website (pmdc.pk) or contact your medical college.

This information is based on the PMDC’s latest notification issued on November 3, 2025.
